Mathematical Information Infrastructure

The Department of Mathematics researches innovative methods and tools for basic mathematical research. The focus is on the use of artificial intelligence to make existing mathematical knowledge more accessible. We are also developing a new type of information infrastructure for collaborative research into new mathematics.

The focus is on the following areas

Exploring the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) to improve access to mathematical information is a new field of research. Our aim is to make reliable mathematical knowledge easier to find. At the moment, mathematical publications are often accessed by means of keyword searches or structured searches using the classification scheme. In the future, there should be a natural language user interface that translates natural language search queries into formal data queries.

Analysis and development of machine methods and processes for the semantic indexing and enrichment of data and documents

This includes the recognition of software or personal names, e.g. of reviewers, as an essential part of our research activity. In addition, we are developing the integrated formula search by enriching the data with semantic information. The formula search offers the possibility of a very precise search for mathematical formulas or formula schemes - independently of or combined with classic text searches.

Development of heuristic methods for linking data and documents with each other and with external sources

These methods are used, for example, to compare literature references with referenced documents in zbMATH using semantic analysis. Similar methods are used to link publications in journals with their corresponding preprints in arXiv or to compare zbMATH articles in which mathematical software is used with entries in the swMATH software database. We are continuously developing these methods so that further external sources and research data can be integrated.

Development of methods for the automatic disambiguation of information on authors

For this purpose, information on research areas, co-authors and external identifiers as well as publication periods and biographical data are evaluated. Comparable procedures are being further developed for the standardization of institution names.

We then use the entities and structured data obtained in this way, for example, to develop a recommendation system for mathematical content or for the automatic classification of documents, research data and software. Furthermore, this data serves as a basis for bibliometric research.

We regularly investigate publication behaviour on zbMATH Open and describe new developments in bibliographic metadata such as co-authors, citations, etc.
