Curriculum Vitae and Publications of Dr. Daniel Mietchen

Daniel’s introduction to the research ecosystem happened through the lens of biophysics, which helped him explore living and preserved biological systems across spatial and temporal scales, particularly from a cross-taxonomic comparative perspective and with an eye on biodiversity, ecology and medicine as well as the evolutionary history of cultural traits like vocal learning or their human manifestations like music and languages. This exposed him to a correspondingly broad range of methods to study biological systems and approaches to designing, handling, sharing, tracing and reusing their digital representations and associated workflows. Over time, his research focus has shifted towards studying the research ecosystem itself and integrating digital facets of research resources and workflows with the open parts of the web, particularly those to which he contributes as a volunteer, such as Wikimedia and citizen science projects or OpenStreetMap. On that basis, scalablecollaboration became one of his research foci. He approaches this from three main angles:

• opening up elements of individual research cycles (e.g. proposals, ethics, data management); 
• engaging communities in web-based collaborations involving such open elements of research cycles;
• enabling automated agents to participate in such collaborations.

He is one of the core developers of the scholarly visualization tool Scholia that is a free and open-source software that visualizes FAIR and open data from Wikidata about scholarly entities, e.g. publications, authors, institutions, conferences, journals, publishers, research topics etc. A live deployment receiving about 100,000 requests per day can be explored at https://scholia.toolforge.org/. 

He is editing the journal Research Ideas and Outcomes and serves as an editor and reviewer for several other journals. He also helped to launch the Biodiversity Data Journal, to convert the Journal of Hymenoptera Research to an open access journal and to define technical aspects of preprint services. He is also an active contributor to Wikidata, which is a sister project to Wikipedia based entirely on open and FAIR data and functions as the public edit button for the semantic web. The contributions go beyond editing, though, and include data modelling, community engagement and development of policies and infrastructure.

He served on the European Commission’s FAIR Data Expert Group and is serving as Cultural Ambassador for Wikimedia Germany and on various advisory boards, including  the Digital Botanical Gardens Initiative and NFDI4Microbiota. He is also involved in other community fora, including the Open Traits Network, the Research Data Alliance, and the International Society for Computational Biology. He helped draft a range of policy documents and standards around open science, data sharing and data integration, from the institutional to disciplinary to international levels.
