The Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) has taken the initiative to present the history of reparations in Germany as an essential aspect of Germany's post-war and democratic history more clearly than has been the case so far. As part of this process to secure and present sources and to research the social transformation after 1945, all relevant sources as well as the associated knowledge are to be referenced, brought together and made accessible at a central place.
The sources and source references are to be supplemented and linked with historical, legal and file information so that the presented sources and the statements contained therein can be classified and evaluated. The presentation is to be multilingual (at least in English, if necessary also in French and Russian). This means that an essential resource of the research infrastructure is provided.
This includes the provision of contextualizing subject-specific content as well as the technology for data provision and linking of the content in Archivportal-D. It will be based on preliminary work from the DFG project „Aufbau einer Infrastruktur zur Implementierung sachhematischer Zugänge im Archivportal-D am Beispiel des Themenkomplexes ‚Weimarer Republik‘“ (Development of an infrastructure for implementing subject-specific access in Archivportal-D using the subject area ‚Weimar Republic‘ as an example“) is to be built upon.
FIZ Karlsruhe has three subtasks in this project:
Implementing the software components necessary for the thematic portal „Wiedergutmachung“ and their maintenance,
Providing and updating the infrastructure necessary for its operation, including ongoing administration
researching into (semi-)automatic indexing procedures and transferring them to productive operation.
As the technical operator and software developer of both the German Digital Library and Archiveportal-D with its thematic portals, FIZ Karlsruhe cooperates closely with its partners, the Federal Archives, the State Archives of Baden-Württemberg, and the German National Library. ISE conducted the pilot project „Wiedergutmachung“ together with the State Archives of Baden-Württemberg (project term: May 01,2020 – December 31, 2022).
