Research campus MODAL

Research campus MODAL researches data-driven modelling, simulation and optimization of complex processes from logistics and medicine technology.  Its aims are, for example, to optimize supply networks and timetables and to improve the possibilities of diagnosing serious illnesses at an early stage. In four topic related laboratories - BahnLab, GasLab, MedLab and cross-methodical SynLab – , innovative ideas are being developed

FIZ Karlsruhe contributes swMATH to SynLab. swMATH is a database that references mathematical software and links it to relevant publications in the abstracting database zbMATH. The aim is to improve the visibility of software-oriented research in mathematics and to further index the content of mathematical software, in particular in view of identifying potential fields of application.  In addition, adapted search and navigation possibilities are developed and statistics for using and referencing software solutions are provided.

The project is funded within the scope of the funding initiative “Forschungscampus – öffentlich-private Partnerschaft für Innovationen“ (Research campus – public-private partnership for innovation) of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) . Up to 20 million euro are envisaged for funding research campus MODAL.  It was one of the ten winners of a competition who prevailed against 96 competitors in a tough two-stage selection process.

The funding initiative “Forschungscampus – öffentlich-private Partnerschaft für Innovationen“ has a high strategic value within the current research policy. With the 10 research campuses planned in total, the BMBF establishes a new type of research structures. For the first time, large-scale, long-term approaches of collaboration between science and industry are created.  This allows for working in complex and manifold research areas involving high risks and having a special potential for leapfrog innovation.
