MaterialDigital

The initiative for the digitalization of materials envisaged by MaterialDigital is of particular strategic importance for Germany as a business location and can only be adequately addressed by pooling the efforts of all stakeholders. Due to the diversity of materials and the processes associated with their production and use, the complexity of the life cycles of materials, and the large number of academic and industrial stakeholders, there are various different activities, but the efforts of all stakeholders are not bundled in a way that could eliminate redundancies and lack of acceptance and promote a common basis in the digitization of materials. Our goal for overcoming this challenge is the consistent contextualization of material data with all stakeholders: All necessary information on the material condition, including production- and usage-related changes, must be made available via a standardized, machine-readable description. Laying the foundation for this is another central task: establishing and transferring a powerful ontology for materials and the associated processes to the applications.

The aim of the project is to develop a sustainable platform that brings together and supports interested parties from the industrial and academic sectors in the implementation of digitization tasks for materials. At the same time, tools are being developed to implement the digitization of materials in practice and which support the economic connectivity of the MaterialDigital platform as the prerequisite for a sustainable business model.
