Karlsruhe, July 23, 2024 — The Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) conference held in Brussels in May 2024 brought together experts from various fields to discuss the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on data protection and privacy. Two renowned academics, Prof. Franziska Boehm and Prof. Eleni Kosta, presented their book “The EU Law Enforcement Directive: A Commentary”, which is intended to serve as a guide for legal scholars, practitioners and other interested parties.

Boehm and Kosta emphasized the importance of jurisdiction and the challenges posed by the use of AI in law enforcement. They emphasized that automated decision-making in law enforcement is a growing field of research. The recently adopted EU Regulation on Artificial Intelligence plays an important role in the discussion on the regulation of AI and its integration into existing legal frameworks.

In conclusion, the two experts pointed out that the link between data protection and AI governance was a key issue of the conference and that further research is needed to find the right balance between technological innovation and the protection of fundamental rights.
