SIGIR 2024 in Washington with strong FIZ participation and fifth PatentSemTech workshop

Karlsruhe, August 5, 2024 – This year's SIGIR (Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval) conference, one of the leading events in the field of Information Retrieval organized by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), once again took place with a strong FIZ presence. On July 18, our colleague Hidir Aras presented the fifth PatentSemTech workshop together with researchers from TU Wien, ZBW Kiel and other institutions, with more thanr 20 participants from research and industry.

Hidir Aras explains what this format is about and what makes it so special: "The PatentSemTech workshop series has established itself as an important pillar in the history of relevant conferences and activities around patent retrieval/analysis since the first scientific conferences on patent retrieval in the context of major conferences such as SIGIR'2000. The workshop has succeeded in bringing together different players related to patents from the IP world and the academic world. It offers a platform for presenting and discussing new solutions and research results relating to patent text mining/retrieval and AI (artificial intelligence)."

The keynote speaker at this year's workshop was Matthew Wahlrab, CEO of RapidAlpha, a company specializing in services and analyses in the IP sector. The extensive agenda included sessions on topics such as IP and artificial intelligence, the challenges posed by multilingual patents and the use of Large Language Models (LLM) within patent mining.

It is planned to continue the series of workshops: There will be a sixth PatentSemTech workshop at SIGIR 2025 in Padua. Participants can once again look forward to new research findings on patent analysis and AI, as well as a varied and above all interactive program.

And what was Hidir Aras' personal highlight at SIGIR24? "The contact with scientists and participants from large companies such as Microsoft, Amazon and Google as well as the exchange with employees of interesting publishers such as the Washington Post, who are increasingly using AI and new technologies in the field of information retrieval to process their data and access their content."
